The Lawrence Hargrave Drive project has
been delayed while repairs and reconfiguring the camera system
are conducted. A number of issues have been experienced that
have made the maintaining of this site an intense and challenging
experience. Catering with the environment at this site has been
difficult. Although much effort has been put into the protection
from corrosion, vandals and the elements the system has taken
a beating.
The last drama has been the repairs required after a big storm
hit the coast. The solar panels and wireless components were
ripped off the pole by the force of the waves. One of the camera
housings was bashed into the lightning rod. Both these were
bend over by about 15º.
Incredibly
the cameras and controller survived and will continue to capture
images of the project to completion.
The new configuration will involve running power to the system
from the construction itself, solar panels will no longer be
employed. Repairs have been required to damaged cabling, camera
mounts, and the new configuration has required an additional
power regulator to keep the local battery charged.
In the mean time time-lapse sequences
have been generated from the exisiting archive and shown on
all Australian TV networks.
Congratulations to the team and to the project for continuing
in such harsh conditions.
