Iron Cove Bridge Duplication Project

Bridge to Bay Alliance , Sydney.
Monitoring construction of : Iron Cove Bridge duplication.

The new bridge will be built using the incremental launching method.

  • Ten piers will be built to support the bridge.
  • Six of these piers will be built in the bed of Iron Cove.
  • The bridge will be launched from the construction area in King George Park where the bridge deck segments are built on-site in a concrete casting bay.
  • The first segment will be cast and pushed out to the first pier.
  • A second segment is then cast against the first segment.  Both segments are then pushed out along the piers.
  • This process is repeated until all 16 sections of the bridge deck are pushed across the piers to form the full length of the bridge.
  • Two large stationary barges will be used to hold equipment and machinery to build the piers. Smaller support barges and boats will be used to deliver concrete, staff and materials to these barges. Work platforms and pontoons will also be used.
Time-lapse coverage is being generated from both the Rozelle and Drummoyne sides of Iron Cove to capture the incremental launches of the bridge deck and the placement of super tees to tie in to the newly constructed abutments.
